    A Wine of Origin district

South Africa's Wine of Origin certification scheme was officially instituted in 1973, and a Wine of Origin name on a label confirms that 100% of the grapes come from that area.1 Stellenbosch is a Wine of Origin district.2 Wines of South Africa notes that the district has been divided into several smaller viticultural units and that its winemaking tradition goes back to the end of the 17th century.3

    Granite and shale

Soils in the Coastal Region come mainly from Precambrian Malmesbury Group sediments (shales, schists, phyllite and greywacke), from granite intrusions of the Cape Granite Suite and from quartzitic sandstones of the Table Mountain Group.2 In the Helderberg area of the Stellenbosch district, parent material may switch between granite and shale over short distances, and one of the parent materials studied was granite of the Stellenbosch pluton.2 These soils are highly weathered.2

Wines of South Africa describes mountainous terrain, good rainfall and deep well-drained soils.3 The Helderberg study used commercial vineyards of Sauvignon blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.2

    Town and route

The town dates back to 1679, when the Cape governor Simon van der Stel named an island in the Eerste River Stellenbosch, and it is home to South Africa's first wine route.4 Stellenbosch University is the only university in the country offering a degree in viticulture and oenology.3
