    Zones and varieties

A study by researchers from the Magarach Institute and RUDN University puts the vineyards of the Crimean peninsula at about 31,500 hectares, concentrated in 12 main zones.1 According to the same paper, 68 wine and 38 table grape varieties are grown on the peninsula, and the varieties it sampled included Furmint, Muscat White (Muscat blanc) and Cabernet Sauvignon.1 The sum of active temperatures in the grape growing period is 3,500 to 4,200 degrees.1

    Soils

Typical vineyard soils on the peninsula are brown, micellar-carbonate and alluvial meadow soils, along with southern chernozems and carbonate soils formed on weathered debris and scree of carbonate rocks.1 A zoning study by the Magarach Institute treats soils with a quality score below 60 points, mainly saline, waterlogged and shallow soils, as unfavourable for vines.2

That study identified 27 ampeloecotopes on the peninsula, of differing suitability for grapes, with a total area of 1,672.6 thousand hectares.2 It names the mean absolute minimum air temperature and the sum of active temperatures above 10 °C as limiting factors, and excludes land above 600 metres as unfavourable relief.2

    Novy Svet

Prince Lev Golitsyn bought the Novy Svet estate in 1878, and its first release came out in 1882.3 He had cellars totalling 3.5 km cut into the nearby Karaul-Oba and Koba-Kaya cliffs.3 In 1896 Novy Svet wine was served at the coronation celebrations of Nicholas II, and in 1900 its sparkling wine won the Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Paris.3
