Llicorella
Priorat soils are dominated by Carboniferous slate called llicorella.2 It breaks into thin, brittle plates of a darkened copper colour.2 The Consell Regulador calls llicorella one of the key elements of the region's terroir.1
Costers and terraces
The terrain is very steep, which hinders mechanisation, and vineyards range from 200 to 700 metres.2 Many are worked as costers, steep slopes, and small plots are often organised on terraces.3 Rainfall is 400 to 500 litres per square metre a year, and the mean temperature 14 to 15 °C.2
Grapes and status
The recommended red varieties are Garnacha tinta (Grenache (Garnacha)) and Cariñena, also called Samsó; Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot are among those authorised.2 The wine carries the traditional mention Denominación de Origen Calificada, DOQ Priorat.2 At the end of 2018 the DOQ had 2,010 hectares of vines.1
