Bottle sizes
Why a bottle holds 750 ml and not 700: in the EU, wine may only be sold in a short list of volumes.
Still wine: eight volumes
Directive 2007/45/EC lists the nominal quantities for still wine in the range from 100 ml to 1,500 ml: 100, 187, 250, 375, 500, 750, 1,000 and 1,500 ml.1
Sparkling wine: five volumes
For sparkling wine the range is 125 ml to 1,500 ml, with five volumes: 125, 200, 375, 750 and 1,500 ml.1

The silhouettes above are scaled by volume: a bottle with twice the volume is drawn about 1.26 times taller and wider, because volume grows with the cube of size.
