    An open question of parentage

VIVC does not list a single confirmed pedigree for Sangiovese; it records different proposals.1 A 2007 study in the journal VITIS concluded that Sangiovese is the progeny of Ciliegiolo and Calabrese di Montenuovo.2

    Where it grows

Sangiovese is Italy's top variety and the only one there to exceed 50,000 hectares.3 In Chianti Classico it must make up 80 to 100% of the blend, and 90 to 100% for Gran Selezione.4
