    Origin

VIVC lists the variety under the prime name Monastrell, from Spain, with 131 synonyms and no confirmed parents.1 It was probably brought to France towards the end of the Middle Ages.2

It buds and ripens late: budburst comes 13 days after Chasselas and maturity four and a half weeks after it.2 French ampelographers advise reserving it for the hottest, best-exposed southern sites.2

    Where it grows

In 2015 Spain had 43,000 hectares, 4.4% of its vineyard area.3 France had 9,149 hectares in 2018.2 In red Bandol it must make up between 50% and 95% of the plantings, and the wines are aged at least 18 months in casks or foudres.4

Under the name Mataro it has grown in the Barossa Valley since the 1830s, and some of the world's oldest continuously producing Mataro vines are there.5
