A grape with many names
Pinot Noir comes from Burgundy.2 The Vitis International Variety Catalogue lists 447 synonyms for it, more than for any other variety in this atlas.1
VIVC records only one parent as confirmed by DNA markers: Savagnin Blanc. The other is unknown.1 A 2006 DNA study found a third-degree genetic relationship between Pinot and Syrah.3
Where it grows
In 2015 Pinot Noir covered about 112,000 hectares worldwide.4 In Champagne it is the most planted grape, on 38% of the vineyard area.5 The hard Bajocian and Bathonian limestones of the Côte de Nuits suit Pinot Noir.6
Pinot is also a parent of Chardonnay.7
